If you select several files in drive.google.com and look for Rename, you only get actions like Download, Move, and Organize. Google never shipped a native bulk rename. That is why people search for add-ons and why a visible tree plus inline rename is often enough.

Rename one file in Google Drive

  1. Open drive.google.com.
  2. Click the file or folder (not the name if you only want to select it).
  3. Press F2 (Windows) or click the name, or use the more menu → Rename.
  4. Enter the new name and press Enter.

Repeat for every file. For ten photos that is fine. For a folder of 80 exports, it is not.

What people try instead

  • Download, rename locally, re-upload: duplicates, new versions, broken links.
  • Sheets + scripts / Marketplace add-ons: extra permissions, often a subscription, and they still need full Drive access.
  • A folder tree in the browser: see every file in the folder, rename in place, stay in Drive (no re-upload).

Faster rename in a tree

Drive Organizer Pro loads My Drive as a tree. Open the folder, click a name, rename, move to the next row. Free includes inline rename. You are not paying for a “bulk rename engine”; you are skipping Drive’s one-folder-at-a-time layout.

We do not currently run find-and-replace across hundreds of names in one click. If you need pattern rename (prefix, sequence numbers), a dedicated bulk-renamer add-on may still fit. For “I can see the files and fix the names,” the tree is the missing piece.
